Spiritual Gifts and Personality Profile

September 13th, 2006

What kind of personality do you have?

Answer: A good one.

Everyone has a good personality! It’s what you do with your personality that matters. You control the use of your personality.

Psalm 139:15

My frame was not hidden from you

when I was made in the secret place.

When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

According to the Bible you were woven together in your mother’s womb by God. God gave you your personality and he doesn’t make mistakes. God’s part in the formation of your personality is what we refer to as “nature” and the environment through which your personality was shaped is the “nurture” component.

Identifying and understanding your personality should help you as you interact with God and those around you. As a matter of fact, the study of your personality will give you invaluable insight into the personalities of others. You will increasingly find yourself having “Aha” moments as you understand yourself and others more deeply.

The Uniquely You Personality Profile is derived from William Marston’s DISC Model of Human Behavior introduced in 1928 through his book The Emotions of Normal People. Mels Carbonell, the author of our study material, very intentionally relates our discoveries from the Spirtiual Gifts Inventory to our Personality Profile with the goal of directing us into healthier relationships and more fruitful ministry.

Open your workbooks to page 8 and begin to carefully work through the Personality portion of our study (pp. 8-28).

Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts

1 Corinthians 12-14 offers an inspired look at the supernatural gifting of individual believers and the role “gifts” should take in the church. For the next three Wednesday’s (Sept. 6th, 13th and 20th) we will explore our own giftedness and how our gifts can best be used to strengthen the church.

Every believer is gifted:

1 Cor. 7:7

I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.

Spiritual Gifts are imparted to build up the body of Christ.

Ephes. 4:11-13

It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Read Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, 1 Peter 4

DO HOMEWORK!

08-23-06 1 Cor 12

1 Cor. 12:1-31

Now concerning spiritual gifts, . . .

4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. 7But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

1.      the word of wisdom through the Spirit v. 8,

2.      and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit v. 8

3.      to another faith by the same Spirit, v. 9

4.      and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, v. 9

5.       10and to another the effecting of miracles, v. 10

6.      and to another prophecy, v. 10

7.       and to another the distinguishing of spirits, v. 10

8.      to another various kinds of tongues, v. 10

9.      and to another the interpretation of tongues. v. 10

11But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

12For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

28And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues.
